How to Open a .lwp File on Windows 11 (Convert Lotus Word Pro to Word)
Lotus Word Pro / SmartSuite documents will not open in modern Word — here are the honest options on Windows 11.

TL;DR
A .lwp is a Lotus Word Pro document from IBM Lotus SmartSuite. Modern Word and Windows 11 will not open it. Support for SmartSuite ended in 2014. Honest options: try SmartSuite in compatibility mode (fragile), use a free office suite where import covers Word Pro 97 and later, or convert .lwp locally with Legacy File Converter to DOCX · PDF · Markdown · HTML. Check the output — especially for older files.
Double-click a .lwp on Windows 11 and you usually get an unsupported-format error or a blank association prompt. That is expected. These are legacy files from Lotus Word Pro, not Word documents that somehow lost their extension.
Why Word and Windows 11 cannot open .lwp
Lotus Word Pro shipped inside Lotus SmartSuite. IBM withdrew SmartSuite marketing in 2013 and ended all support on 30 September 2014, with no replacement programs. After that date there was no remaining vendor reader from the company that sold the suite. Modern Microsoft Word has no reliable built-in Lotus Word Pro import for everyday users, and Windows itself never shipped a Word Pro viewer.
- Modern Word will not open .lwp as a native format.
- Windows 11 has no built-in Lotus Word Pro viewer.
- Renaming .lwp to .doc or .docx does not convert the file.
.lwp is not .sam and not .wpd
Ami Pro used .sam. WordPerfect uses .wpd. Lotus Word Pro’s native save format is .lwp. Same broad “old word processor” problem, three different on-disk formats. Background: History Lesson: What Is a .lwp File?.
Honest options on Windows 11
There is no perfect one-click path that restores every SmartSuite memo looking identical to 1998. Pick the option that matches the files you have and how much fidelity you need.
1. Reinstall SmartSuite in compatibility mode
If you still have a licensed SmartSuite installer, some people try running it on Windows 10/11 with compatibility settings. Treat that as a last resort. Installers from that era often fail, drivers and fonts may be missing, and unsupported software is a poor long-term plan for an archive. Even when it launches, you are still stuck on a discontinued suite.
2. Free office suites (limited import)
Some free office suites can import Lotus Word Pro documents. That import is generally limited to Word Pro 97 and later files. Pre-97 .lwp dialects, complex frames, headers, and embedded objects often fail or look wrong. If a suite opens your file, export to DOCX or PDF and compare against the original before you discard the .lwp.
3. Convert locally with Legacy File Converter
Legacy File Converter lists Lotus Word Pro / .lwp among supported documents on Supported File Types. On Windows it can convert .lwp locally to modern targets such as DOCX, PDF, Markdown, and HTML. Nothing is uploaded. This is a practical path when you want editable Word files or archival PDFs without hunting for SmartSuite media.
Check the output — especially older files
Do not promise yourself perfect fidelity for pre–Word Pro 97 files, frames, or headers. Conversion quality for every dialect is not guaranteed. Open the result next to the original and verify text and layout before you rely on it.
Add .lwp files or a folder
Drop individual Lotus Word Pro documents or point at an archive folder of .lwp files.
Choose a modern target
DOCX for editing in Word, PDF for a frozen copy, Markdown or HTML when you need plain structured text.
Convert offline and compare
Everything stays on this PC. Spot-check the output against the original — especially anything older than Word Pro 97.
Summary
A .lwp will not open in modern Word or Windows 11 because Lotus Word Pro died with SmartSuite support in 2014. Reinstalling SmartSuite is fragile. Free office suites may help for Word Pro 97+ files only. For a local Windows path to DOCX, PDF, Markdown, or HTML, Legacy File Converter can convert listed .lwp files without uploading them — then verify the result.
